Yes, it's time to stop pretending Willie Mays is a kid. Even if a kid -- smiling, eyes twinkling, the cap falling off as he ran -- is what Mays will always be in the mind's eye.
The greatest living ballplayer turns 70 today. Mays doesn't have any official claim to the Greatest Living Ballplayer title, but that doesn't make it any less so. The truth is, Mays was the greatest living ballplayer even when Joe DiMaggio was still drawing breath.
A 1969 panel bestowed the GLB title on DiMaggio, who insisted on being introduced as such at any public function he deigned to attend. Really, you have to wonder if it was a blue-ribbon …
